Aotea History
1979
Aotea New Zealand was born, originally as the Aotea Greenstone and Sheepskin Factory in Takanini near Auckland. The store started off small, with only our founder Peter Hanson and five employees, but it had a big heart.
1980’s
It didn’t take long for Aotea Sheepskin and Greenstone Factory to evolve, and it expanded into stores in Auckland CBD, Rotorua, Christchurch & Queenstown; many of which are still here today.
2000's
Unfortunately, when the Christchurch Earthquakes hit in 2011, our three stores in the Christchurch CBD had to close because of the extensive damage in the area. Although devastating, this encouraged us to seek new opportunities.
Current Day
Over the years, Aotea has undergone rebranding and restructuring and remains at the forefront of the tourism and retail industries. Aotea New Zealand remains family owned and operated, with sons Richard and Donald Hanson as operating the business as Directors.
